Tale of the Tape
---
Ami Mikami: T:148 cm / B:86cm / W:59cm / H:87cm / Age: 18
Keico Shirakawa: T:160 cm / B:82cm / W:59cm / H:86cm / Age: 22
*Note: Normally, the name is spelled "Keiko" in English, but on the cover art, it's spelled with a "C",
so I'm going with that."
As requested by a fellow enthusiast on Twitter, it was time to get down and write the review.
Inspired by the blog of TM, there was a lack of an English presence in the underground wrestling scene. Unbeknownst to me, the directors at AKIBACOM have been putting out an assortment of DVDs and merchandise for years. Whether it is a labor of love or more fulfilling a hedonistic niche, I cannot help but be grateful.
The review today hosts two lovely competitors who would make men give a second look walking down the street.
Keico saunters into the ring first, donning a black and white arena swimsuit with matching accessories.
With a catchy hip-hop beat playing in the background, Ami enters the ring next in a royal blue number with white kneepads and white boots. Every line and curve is packed into the suit of that 148 cm frame, giving you a festival of the eyes.
What makes some of the early works from AKIBA great is the simplicity of the attire.
The one-piece mizugi originated during the preliminary periods of women's wrestling had onlookers focusing on the performers' techniques rather than individualized characters.
It is a sight to behold, and the makers at AKIBA recognize the importance of sticking to your roots, especially if those roots involve Japanese actresses of a certain je ne se quoi.
The fight begins with both competitors circling each other, looking for an opening to exploit.
The girls lock up, pushing against each other with all of their strength until Ami slips behind her opponent.
With a few short elbows, Keico reverses the move, now having the advantage.
Ami recognizes what's happening and does the very same thing right back, shuffling directly behind Keico once again.
With a kick of her back leg, Ami delivers a low blow to her opponent, followed by a DDT.
Ami takes the offensive early on the groggy Keico, getting her in a headlock.
"Give up?" Ami replies, locking the hold. Keico shakes her head in defiance, and she tries to kick out of the submission.
Eventually, Ami lifts her adversary and whips her toward the ropes.
She goes for a clothesline, but Keico slips under the attack and bounces off the opposite end of the ring.
Ami catches her, forcing her to the ground and locking the arm.
Keico winces softly, trying not to give up.
Ami flips over and executes an armbar, causing her rival to wriggle in pain.
All the momentum is on the smaller competitor's side, now wrapping Keico in a neck scissors.
It seems the match will be over soon until…
Keico breaks out of the hold!
Now Keico uses a submission of her own, forcing Ami to clamor for the ropes. Just as she is about to reach…
Keico pulls her back for more punishment!
"Give up, shinasai!" Keico responds to which Ami is noncompliant.
Mounting her opponent, Keico maintains the leg hold while pulling Ami up in a clutch. Her back and abdomen are stretched to the absolute limit as Ami cries out in anguish.
The move continues for a few minutes until Ami is pulled into a surfboard hold.
More cries are heard as Keico drives her boot and knee into the lower back of Ami. The action is complete and uncompromising.
According to TM, many of the Japanese fans like submissions and the selling of the move sets. As an enthusiast of grappling techniques, I initially did not see the appeal. That is until I heard the voices of the fighters. Then it made all the sense in the world, LOL.
Lifting her petite opponent, Keico drives Ami into the turnbuckle, crashing her head against the corner posts. The onslaught continues with a series of knee strikes, elbow strikes, and ring collisions until Ami slumps into a battered lump of sinew.
She slides out of the ring to get a reprieve while Keico taunts her from the high ground. The referee begins to count.

"I will not lose!" Ami retaliates, hurrying back into the ring, as Keico sinks into one of the corners.
With a stare down, both competitors know their battle has only just begun!
